Misfit Acres Inc is a safe haven homeless horses
August 21, 1994, we are petting my first horse. She is 8 years old, has a satiny coat the most beautiful eyes and she is mine. She was no longer wanted and wound up in the “Kill Pen”. She was purchased from the kill pen to be a child’s riding horse but she was not a child’s horse. In a matter of minutes, she will be named Lucky and she will come home with us.
That was 10 years ago. Lucky is now the official mascot of Misfit Acres Inc. Located six miles south of Good Thunder, Misfit Acres Inc is a safe haven for homeless horses. We currently have three senior residents, Misty who will be 32 years old this spring, Pibbs, also in his early thirties, Dandy, who really doesn’t know how old she is. An 11-year-old OTTB mare will be our newest member due to arrive within days. Each has their own story as to how they came to be at Misfit Acres Inc. Each horse will live out their remaining years with us never having to know the fear of live slaughter, neglect or abuse. Augie Doggy is Lucky’s colt from 1997. Having one foal was something we always wanted to experience. But he too will remain at Misfit Acres.
When we learned about the live slaughter industry via Lucky’s life, we chose to get actively involved in equine welfare. Our love of horses combined with the research we have done regarding equine welfare led us to start our own equine sanctuary apply for incorporation status February of 2004. As of March 18, we have been granted federal tax-exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service allowing us to issue receipts to anyone donating to our horses.
Until the favorable determination by the IRS, this labor of love has been entirely funded by Bruce & Jody Thisted. We are the official feed mixers, hay unloaders, chore time participants, and pooper scoopers. Pets and pats for furry heads when we get home from work, animal crackers shared with our equine friends under a starry sky – these are just examples of life at Misfit Acres Inc. for our horses. We treat each horse according to his or her own personality as we get to know them. It usually doesn’t take long for them to neigh and whinny at us and we know which one is talking.
We hold the position of Minnesota State Coordinators for the American Horse Defense Fund (www.ahdf.org) which has been a great way to meet and bring together many horse enthusiasts in Minnesota and surrounding states. We are closely involved with two other Minnesota Horse Rescues - Blarney Farm of Chaska and A & L Equine Sanctuary of Motley.
Please take a minute and consider giving something back to the horses. Horses are our working partners, greatest athletes, and constant companions. On our website www.misfitacres.com be sure to sign our guestbook. Our “Phones for Horses” page is a great way for you to donate your old cell phones and inkjet cartridges. Tax deductions are available for your old cell phones. (www.misfitacres.com/phonesforhorses.htm)
We also invite you to take a look at our horse jewelry fundraising. These pieces are perfect for that “horse loving” little girl in you life, as gifts, or even for yourself!! (www.misfitacres.com/whats_new.htm) Our “Café Press” gift store offers a wide variety of items available as fundraising tools also. (www.misfitacres.com/gifts.htm) We will be adding a “Wish List” page in the near future.
But mostly, please consider making a donation to Misfit Acres Inc for direct care of our “formerly” unlucky horses to help give them the care they so richly deserve.
4/20/04: It looks as though we are going to be in for some heavy Dr bills for one of our seniors and we could use your help with our fundraisers - our cell phone campaign, inkjet cartridges, and jewelry sales. We have also signed up with Anyone not familiar with igive.com, they have many, many on-line merchants who will donate a percentage of sales to charities signed up under igive.com. There is every type of store you can think of as part of this program - florists to clothing etc. Please open an account with them and Misfit Acres gets a donation for each new account opened designated Misfit Acres as your cause. There is no charge to do this and they do not flood your email box with advertising. If you chose to shop, sign in under pick the stores you want and Misfit Acres gets the percentage designated by that merchant. If you don't save your Farnam points or send them to another program, please send them to us at Misfit Acres. We also need anyone's special feed mix receipts for Dandy. She is losing weight rapidly - again . We had her built up pretty well for a while. We need to come up with some "easy to eat' mixtures for her. She has no teeth left on either side on top. We currently have her on senior feed, weight builder, corn oil and soaked alfalfa cubes. We have the vet coming out to look at her. She appears to have lost most of the site in both eyes now. She will not shed this year either. Jody
Want to Help a Horse? Misfit Acres is now part of the KwikTrip Kwik Rewards program. If you have not already designated a charity for your Kwik Trip card, please consider designating Misfit Acres. When you use your Kwik Trip card, the three cents per gallon rebate goes to Misifit Acres Sanctuary. Even if you do not use your Kwik Trip card, please consider setting this up anyway. We need 4 more people to at least name us as their charity. Bruce and I are already on it but in order to active our account with them, we need 4 more folks to designate us. Otherwise, our own three cent per gallon donation won't qualify us. horses for sale
