How does the MPtHA Limited Breeders Futurity work? How do you keep the deadlines straight? Why should I nominate my stallion? Why buy a stallion service through the program?

Mare Owners (Service fee purchasers) First of all, you do NOT need to participate in the MPtHA program to buy a breeding. There is no requirement to show the resulting foal. This program gives the mare owner an opportunity to purchase a breeding to a top quality stallion beginning at one-half of his normal fee. If a stallion that you are interested in breeding your mare to is not enrolled in the program, suggest that the owner consider donating his breeding to the program! Sometimes a stallion owner may just need some incentive—especially if he knows that you may show the resulting foal. If you see a stallion that you have interested in on the list, you may contact the stallion owner to find out what his mare care rates are and what requirements he has for visiting mares. There are many stallion service’s still available on a first come, first served basis! ALL PURCHASERS MUST BE MPtHA MEMBERS. This is a one time annual fee of $20. You will automatically begin receiving our monthy newsletter, ON THE SPOT, which will contain forms that you will see referred to in this article. If you are planning to show the resulting foal, there are a few simple things you need to do. By Dec. 31 of the breeding year, the mare owner (stallion service purchaser) is required to submit a Mare Nomination Form, even if the mare did not settle. Once you are a member, this form can be found in the Sept-Nov/Dec newsletters. By purchasing a breeding, you are not required to show the resulting foal. That is a privilege that you may choose. ALL foal owners must submit a Foal Nomination Form (found in the June & July newsletters) by August 1st of the foaling year to participate in the Limited Breeders Futurity classes without penalty at the Fall Futurity Show. If your mare does not produce a live foal and a reasonable attempt has been made to breed the mare, a mare may be given a return service the second year. Written verification, along with a veterinary statement (if applicable) MUST be provided to the LB Chairperson.

MPtHA also provides a Yearling Jackpot class. In 2004, this class will be open to any yearling sired by a stallion whose fee was donated for the 2002 breeding season. Yearlings sired by both sold and unsold stallions may be shown for a $50.00 fee. The Yearling Jackpot Entry Form can be found in the June & July newsletters.

Stallion owners: Let’s start with the reasons to donate your stallion’s service to the program and how to go about doing that.

MPtHA provides free advertising for donated stallion services, whether they are purchased or unpurchased by printing a detailed list of stallions which is published in the “On The Spot” newsletter and our website (www.pinto.org/users/minnesota/) from Jan/Feb through June. We also provide the opportunity to include your stallion in a professional quality video which is presented at the annual banquet and the MN Horse Expo-- along with other functions. At the annual banquet, each stallion owner is allowed space on a table to advertise his stallion. Your stallion does NOT need to be a Pinto and you do NOT need to be a member of MPtHA to donate your stallion’s service. The October - April issues of the newsletter contain the Stallion Nomination Form. By returning this form to the Limited Breeders chairperson, your stallion will be enrolled in the program and his stud service will be available for purchase beginning at the annual banquet. You are encouraged provide a photo or flyer of your stallion with the nomination form to be included in the stallion books. The starting bid will be one-half of his advertised or normal standing fee. If your stallion’s service does not sell at the banquet, it will remain available until it is sold or until June 1, 2004 --whichever comes first. When your stallion’s service is sold, you may then show any 2005 foal that you own who is sired by this stallion in the Limited Breeders weanling futurity. You may also choose to buy your own stallion’s breeding. This entitles you to show 2 weanlings in 2005 sired by your stallion. Stallion owners are given the option of purchasing their own stallion’s unsold breeding until June 15, 2004. The stallion owner is NOT required to choose which mare will be used to breed to the stallion and is allowed to select from his foal crop the following year. Therefore, the stallion owner does NOT need to submit a Mare Nomination Form by Dec. 31 of the breeding year (unless he has purchased his own stallion’s breeding).

September 1, 2003 –June 1, 2004---Stallion Nomination Forms accepted. December 31st, 2004---Mare nomination forms due for foals due in 2005. February 8 – June 1, 2004---Services not sold at Feb. banquet available for purchase.
