Running With Feeling By Torie Anderson Running With Feeling By Torie Anderson 12/13/07 Everyone has a special place. It can be a place that relaxes you, calms you and soothes you, a place where you find nothing but happiness. Or it can be a place that excites you, a place that gives you an adrenaline rush and puts you at the edge of your seat. My special place is on the back of a horse. When I'm on the back of a horse, whether it's English or western, whether we are running, jumping, or trail riding, I am the happiest. The biggest adrenaline rush is when I'm flying down the road at top speed. When I get going so fast, the breath catches in my throat and tears stream down my face. My horse's hoof beats pounding in the dirt are a sweet lullaby to my ears and the sound of our hearts beating fills me with joy. The wind whips my horse's mane everywhere in unison with mine. When I finally catch my breath, my horse and I are breathing in sync, hard, heavy, and powerful breaths. I love the feeling of my horse's sweat on her neck, white and hot, and the connection and communication with her through the reins. I can feel her chomping at the bit, playing with it, wanting to grab it in her teeth and run without constraint. I love the feeling of her muscles surging and reaching with every stride to go faster and faster, it's almost as if she will sprout wings and we will fly high above the clouds. Her muscles are like a rocket taking off, unleashing it's pure and amazing power, she is going so fast that her feet barely touch the ground. She is a sight to behold. Tail held high in the air, head and neck stretched, medium bay body flexing and moving, and her legs churning up the dirt. She is truly outstanding. At these speeds things just whiz by and are a giant blur, I can't tell the trees from the fields, the road from the sky. Colors blend and melt together like a wet oil painting. There are sounds all around me, the animals in the trees, and tractor in the distance, mine and my horses breathing, the sound of her hooves beating rhythmically on the ground, and the squeak of my well used saddle being stretched to its limits. My voice trails in the wind as I talk to my horse, encouraging her to go faster. It's not the words that I speak but the sounds that I make that soothe her, letting her know I am there. Doing something so exhilarating sharpens my senses to an almost inhuman feeling. When all of these sensations combine, my horse and I are truly one with another, she doesn't fight for her head and I don't push her to go faster, I simply ask her and she gives, bursting forth with another surge of speed, furious with the want and need to go faster and to be the fastest. If someone had been watching they wouldn't have believed she could give more, but she does for me and for our love of running. During these moments our love couldn't be stronger, our bond is unbreakable. At the end of my run, feelings rush through me like a mighty river; happiness, power, excitement, fear, joy, pride, and most of all love, love for my horse, love for myself, and love for the breathtaking spectacle that we put on for nature and nature only. Special places can mean different things and be different things to a variety of people. My special place is one of the most amazing in the world and nothing can compare with it. It is my heart and soul, I was born with it and so shall I die with it. I've always dreamed of sharing these feelings with someone, I wish people could comprehend the power of the emotions that run through me and someday I hope to share it with my children. Having horse crazy children would be one of the most satisfying feelings in the world and maybe they will have these types of things to write about in their 11th grade English class. _______________________________________ Thoughts from Tori's mother:
I have always had these same feelings when I ride horses, whether they are mine or yours. To have a Daughter that can write this from her heart is more than any horse Mom could possibly imagine........To have been able to give her the opportunity to experience this is unlike any other feeling I have ever had! Congrats to her on her upcoming H.S. Graduation, completion this summer of her AIT Training with the US Army, and hopefully moving on to college at U of M Crookston for her future in horse business and BS in Animal Sciences!!
